A Message from Our Founder
After more than 25 years in education, I've learned one truth that has shaped everything I believe:
Students don't fail because they can't learn. Too often, they struggle because the learning environment fails to recognize who they are and how they learn best.
Throughout my career, I watched bright, capable, and creative students become disengaged—not because they lacked potential, but because traditional systems often leave little room for curiosity, individuality, meaningful relationships, or authentic learning.
I realized that lasting change wouldn't come from trying to fix every broken system.
It would come from building something different.
Maya Angelou School of the Arts was created as a relationship-centered learning community where students are known, supported, challenged, and inspired to grow academically, creatively, socially, and emotionally.
Here, learning extends beyond assignments and assessments. Through authentic Learning Experiences, students ask meaningful questions, solve real-world problems, collaborate with others, express themselves creatively, and develop the confidence to lead with purpose.
Our goal is not simply to help students achieve academically. It is to nurture creative thinkers, effective communicators, critical problem solvers, self-directed learners, and collaborative community members who are prepared to make a meaningful impact in the world.
MASA is more than a school. It is a commitment to reimagining what learning can be when relationships come first and every child is empowered to learn, create, and lead.
